Artisan crafts needs its own forum
Wikipedia definition (bear with me non-jeweler artisans, this was the best description of us as artisans I could find. For non-artisans, this artistic bent to our craft applies to us as a group):
An artisan, also called a craftsman, is a skilled manual worker who uses tools and machinery in a particular craft. In Europe during the Middle Ages artisans usually organized into guilds. Guilds were associations of master artisans that were granted charters by the local sovereign authority. To become an artisan in the guilds, a person worked under a master artisan as an unpaid apprentice at a young age. If the apprentice completed the training, the apprentice became a paid journeyman. For a journeyman to become a master artisan, he would have to produce a masterpiece that met the standards of the guild. Artisan jewelry dates back as far as 7000 BC when gold and copper began to be sculpted to adorn the human form and the practice continues today. Although rarely price competitive with machine-made items, handmade artisan jewelry is prized for its uniqueness, variety and often unsurpassed beauty. Reflecting the talents of the artisan onto the wearer, the broad spectrum of artisan jewelry is available to provide satisfaction to queens, rock stars and "everyday folk." Numerous jewelry artisans exist around the globe.
I realize that it's logical to fit the artisan crafts crowd in with traditional art because we are an art that deals in non digital media. However, we have our own gallery, out own admin, and our own unique tools. Actually, in many ways, digital and traditional art have more in common than traditional art and artisan crafts because the digital artist "paint" and "draw" even if they are using different methods. Our category being lumped in with the traditional art tends to lead to people ignoring us. Most people don't realize we're even here, many don't know what we are, and those that do often disregard us as an art. The traditional art forum is not the public sounding board for crafters that it is for drawers and painters, because after all, to a metalsmith who spends their days making swords or metal sculpture, a jeweler who casts silver or wraps wire, a leatherworker who tools purses, bags, and saddles, or a potter who shapes clay on a wheel is going to have little use for discussions on differing kinds of paper or the merits of colored pencils over markers or paints anymore than most traditional artists have for discussions on firing temperatures, sand casting or sewing machine brands. Likewise, discussions on the merits of anime or tips on anatomy and hands have no use for us. The forum is so full of discussions that have nothing to do with our art that the rare artisan craft post is rarely replied to because we ignore the forum.
In short, we artisan crafters need our own forum to discuss our tools, techniques, and differing concerns as artists.

Now that I think of it, I have an afghan pattern I've wanted to use for some time now...and its not that big. I could have an artisan crafts forum blanket by Friday!
